I think some of us get so caught up in this healing journey, so addicted to the self study, this endless quest, that we don’t even stop to appreciate all the work we’ve done. Our self awareness can become a hyper critical cage we impose on ourselves of unrealistic expectations and constantly moving goalposts, and we start forgetting to see the forest through the trees. We can spend so much time studying how and why we are, manifesting, goal setting, self regulating, that we forget to actually just BE.

Having a little meltdown every now and again or getting triggered by your gaslighting boss doesn’t mean all your work is gone to hell. It means you’re human. Thank god. It’s a beautiful thing to have all those feelings. Shit if you’re not having a minor meltdown every so often with the state of our world I think that’s a little weird! So let’s just remember to have more grace with ourselves on this healing journey and always allow space for our humanity. AI is our heartless producer, not you, we need your mushy, gushy, imperfect, fiery soul and all that it creates, so keep going ❤️‍🔥

Robin Williams died by suicide 12 years ago today. One of the most brilliant humans of our time in my opinion. I love this clip from Patch Adams so much because I think it speaks to our societies narrow and negative view of death so well, and touches on the callous nature of medical system. If you haven’t seen the movie go watch it. Definitely watch everything you can Robin Williams was involved in, he was so special and incredible to watch. Just a one of one 🤍

Now I love therapy, I was raised by a therapist, there are so many well educated, compassionate, competent therapists out there doing the lords work. However, most therapists are simply not specialized in grief support, and even if they are, have a very standardized and clinical approach to the matter. As a coach specifically trained in trauma informed grief support and somatic therapy, there are such a different array of tools available in my toolkit, things I can say and do and ways I can operate and relate with my clients that a therapist simply isn’t able to within the constraints of the institutional medical system.

Traditional talk therapy can be a great option, but it’s just one piece of the pie in the healing journey of grief - a holistic mind body and soul approach that is needed for what is some of the deepest work of our lives. Talking, rehashing, retelling, intellectualizing, analyzing and replaying the past will only get you so far at the end of the day. Grief must be felt, expressed, witnessed and moved through the body. Not easy! As a coach I can sit with you as a collaborator, mentor, fellow griever and feel with you, hold you accountable, gently pull and push, and be there as we pull on the threads that therapy may have left hanging for you. Spoiler alert: they’re probably hanging out of your hip or back or somewhere 😉

I know our pain and suffering can be a bummer, hard to witness, messy, uncomfortable, and even inconvenient for the people around us, but honestly I think the hellscape truly provides a beautiful learning opportunity for everyone involved. Grief really can be our greatest teacher if we let it, and whether we like it or not there’s a whole lot of wisdom to be gained in the struggle.

Save this and send it to your friends and family or someone who might be affected by your loss and the big scary emotions that come with it. Maybe healing can be a team sport.

No really though, you’re allowed to carry on with life, travel, play, laugh, and still be grieving. Holding multiple emotions at once is often the reality of grief and we’re not somehow more loyal to our passed loved one if we stay miserable and deny ourselves the pleasures of life. Bad days will happen, so take the good when you can and let yourself breathe. Maybe even play mermaids sometime. It’s good for the soul. 🧜🏼‍♀️💖

I’ve been very lucky to find a really awesome community of really grounded people in the yoga and spiritual wellness community who are very well in touch with the shadow side of self and life and appreciate the beauty and balance in that, but man there’s some people out there who are really full of shit.

Can we talk about toxic positivity? Now I 1000% believe in the power of the mind, manifestation, confirmation bias and speaking things into existence and all that. It’s real. HOWEVER, when it comes to things like trauma, mental illness, grief etc, thinking positive just really isn’t that simple and I find it to be pretty irresponsible to spread that message.

Sometimes it is as simple as making a decision or a choice, but most of the time it’s not. Most of the time people need small incremental change and support getting there, and the pressure and platitudes just leave people feeling so inadequate, incapable and flawed that they end up doing nothing at all to change. Another huge mistake.

And sometimes things just suck and nothing really makes it better. And that’s ok. I don’t need to find a silver lining in my ex taking his own life. Not everything happens for a reason. Telling his family to be strong is probably the last thing they wanted to hear. Time doesn’t heal all wounds. And that’s ok. We need to learn to be ok with these “negative” emotions and just feel the suck, and just let it suck sometimes instead of trying to fix and heal everything as quickly as possible. We can acknowledge the shitty things and let them be shitty, and still hold the beauty of life. Life is a YES AND not either or.

Psychologist and writer @adamgrant says “In hard times, urging people to stay positive doesn’t boost their resilience, it denies their reality. People in pain don’t need good vibes only. They need a hand to stay steady through all the vibrations. Strength doesn’t come from forced smiles, it comes from feeling supported.”

If you’ve lost a love one and you want someone to sit in the suck with you, and hold your hand steady through all the vibrations, not just the positive ones, I’ll be your Huckleberry 🖤

This poem from @donnaashworthwords is still one of the most beautiful I’ve read on grief to this day.

“You don’t move on after loss, but you must move with.
You must shake hands with grief, welcome her in, for she lives with you now.
Pull her a chair at the table and offer her comfort.
She is not the monster you first thought her to be.
She is love.
And she will walk with you now, stay with you now, peacefully.
If you let her.
And on the days when your anger is high, remember why she came, remember who she represents.
Remember.
Grief came to you my friend because love came first.
Love came first.”

Such a beautiful perspective on grief and a reminder that it really is a reflection of our love. And that part is a beautiful thing.

So simple. Affirming. No pressure. Not dancing around the subject. It’s so nice for people to not only acknowledge that yes we know you might still be sad but WHY, without trying to avoid the topic like hot lava. I promise bringing it up isn’t going to hurt our feelings. We want to be seen.

Especially around anniversaries and holidays it can be really hard to face all the reminders and merriment, and a little acknowledgment goes a long way.

To anyone who has ever felt completely unlike themselves in grief, this one’s for you.

I spent so long thinking I just needed to try harder. Sleep more. Eat better. Pull it together.

I had to accept that my body was grieving too.

Grief doesn’t just break your heart, it rewires your biology. And for a long time, I had no idea my symptoms had a name, let alone a scientific explanation.

Here are 4 physical symptoms of grief most people never talk about:

🧠 1. Brain fog: Cortisol floods your system, taking your prefrontal cortex offline. You’re not lazy. You’re in survival mode.

🌿 2. Digestive issues: The gut-brain connection is real. When your nervous system is overwhelmed, digestion slows. Nausea, bloating, no appetite - all normal grief responses.

💔 3. Chest tightness & breathlessness: Your sympathetic nervous system is on overdrive. Broken heart syndrome is a real medical condition. Your body treats heartbreak like injury, because neurologically it is one.

I always find that the funniest people are often capable of the biggest range of emotions, they carry a surprising depth and sometimes this subtle sadness. You can usually assume they’ve been through some shit. If if you can laugh at yourself and the world, or bring light to certain situations, I feel like you get it. Dark humor is something we share in the grief community and I love that for us. So it’s no surprise to me that one of my favorite quotes on grief comes from the incomparable Jim Carrey.

Grief means having conflicting feelings a lot of the time. Having a great day and crying anyway. Being happy and still having that ache in your heart. I’m at a place where I love my life and so many exciting things are happening for me in life and business, I have and am doing so much healing work on myself that I’m so proud of, I have the tools to regulate my nervous system and calm myself down most of the time, be aware of my patterns, I feel happy, healthy, thriving and on my way to everything I want. And still, that lingering sadness of grief is still there a lot of the time.

But that’s ok. I made friends with that shit. We hang out. I don’t fight my shadow. I walk with it, talk to it, love on it, listen to it. And that’s the difference. I don’t believe that we need to “move on” from grief, deny the hard parts of life or dark parts of ourselves in order to have a beautiful life. We don’t have to wait for some sort of wild enlightenment, some mystical experience or completion of healing to start living the good life. We can do it now. Messy and imperfect, with really good days and bad days sprinkled in. It’s not easy, but we definitely can do it, and you might even surprise yourself along the way.

Did you know the DSM defines a “normal” grief response as 12 months for adults and 6 months for children…umm what??? Longer “intense” grief can be diagnosed as Prolonged Grief Disorder. This is characterized by intense emotional pain, identity disruption, emotional numbness, intense loneliness, difficulty reintegrating into life or relationships etc….

With all due respect to the psych community, what the actual f??? Who the hell decided that we should stop feeling pain, loneliness or any damn thing about something so heartbreaking in any specific amount of time??

No wonder our society doesn’t know how to properly handle grief when even so called professionals don’t. You’re allowed to feel sad about death for the rest of your life and that doesn’t mean anything is wrong with you or that you have a disorder. Yes there are healthy and unhealthy ways to manage that sadness, but the sadness is allowed to exist, and anyone who tells you otherwise can kindly F off.

It is absolutely possible to create a life of happiness and meaning again, while still holding space for your grief. And if you’re looking for support and validation in finding that balance, reach out.

Today marks 3 months since we adopted Chicken from @sdhumanesociety and it always amazes me how emotionally in tuned dogs really are. Literally every time I get upset or start crying, even quietly, he so quickly comes running to me and jumps up to kiss on me and check on me.
