It’s not our fault that we were born into a society that has forgotten how sacred grief is, but we do have the amazing opportunity to shift that narrative. From the time we’re little we are taught to stifle big feelings, to avoid negative emotions, sadness and death. We definitely weren’t taught how to process those big emotions in our bodies. And so they show up in all sort of unhealthy ways - chronic illness, addiction, toxic behaviors and patterns.

It’s a lot of work to break these cycles but having grounding practices to return to when you’re hit with a big wave of grief or a tough moment of dysregulation can make all the difference in the world. Having that self attunement and listening to the bodies inner wisdom can be a huge asset when facing all of life challenges. It’s a sacred and beautiful thing to have such capacity for such big emotions as human beings, but learning to master our emotions instead of being mastered by them is where the magic is.

Boundaries- have em, use em.

Boundaries are so important to figure out and maintain while grieving. Your capacity for social time, work and family obligations and even talking about your loss may vary day to day and you need to stay honest with yourself and people in your life about that. Give yourself grace and don’t feel guilty about needing space, changing or having different priorities after your loss. This is your life, your mental health and your grief process and don’t let anyone tell you what it needs to look like.

Like another one of my favorite quotes says, “Be who you are and say what you feel, because those who mind don’t matter, and those who matter don’t mind”. 🖤✨

Love this perspective from a recent interview with @harryjowsey. Grief is truly so sacred. In our grief-phobic, hustle culture of toxic positivity we really do undervalue perceived “negative” emotions like grief, which can actually be our greatest teachers in life.

This leaves so many people feeling isolated, misunderstood, angry and resentful. Or feeling like there’s something wrong with them, when really we live in a society that doesn’t teach us how to honor and integrate the dark and shadow side of life and ourselves properly. This is not a flaw or personal failure, but really more of a cultural issue.

Part of the beauty (and the infuriating part) of our humanity is that capacity to feel that full spectrum of emotion and experiences. We cannot deny or dull it any more than we might at times like to, or than society would like us to. As for me and Harry, I hope it never goes away. 🖤✨

Hard truths. Avoiding our shit does nothing for us. We’re only prolonging our pain, and often times compounding our problems by brushing them under the rug. We do this to ourselves as individuals, as a society, culturally, over generations, it never works. This applies to grief, family traumas, social justice issues and so many things we face as individuals and as a whole.

Facing issues with honesty, truth and compassion is the only way forward. Calling out and breaking these patterns in ourselves and our lineage is some of the hardest and most rewarding work we can do. Learning to find strength in vulnerability and take accountability for problematic truths in our personal and collective histories without defensiveness or shame, but open mindedness, willingness to learn and grow. The choice to transform instead of being pursued. We can find a way forward, we can learn new ways of being, learn to feel safe and at peace again, and be transformed by our experiences instead of at the mercy of them.

So immensely proud of the way I see people coming together to meet this moment. It may be painful, it may be scary, it may be long overdue, but to see people unite over justice, common decency and compassion in a time of so much uncertainty and division is incredible and inspiring.

Let this collective grief reveal something in us as individuals and as a people, to remind us how powerful we are when we stand together, transmute our pain and grief into something positive, always leading with justice and compassion first.

I stand fervently against the actions of immigration enforcements, authoritarianism, and the violent actions perpetrated against citizens and immigrants of any “status”. Basic human decency and empathy shouldn’t be controversial. It doesn’t “depend”. It shouldn’t have to directly affect you to matter to you.

And for those of you who weren’t sure or have been on the sidelines, you are allowed to change your mind based on new information and say “I can no longer support this. A commitment to growth, self love, self care & community, a better world, healing, starts with all of us caring for ourselves. On the darkest days and the brightest days of the year, we know life is not a highlight reel & healing doesn’t happen in a straight line. We ride the waves with hopeful hearts, honest conversations and deep love. We’re not pretending we’re ok when we’re not, we honor the full spectrum of our feelings & we don’t live our lives trying to be more palatable to others.

Take a cue from winter and learn that rest is an essential part of life. Rebirth, growth and new beginnings are only possible because of these necessary pauses. In our culture we are so inundated with messages that our value comes from productivity, hustle, achievement, doing the most, and having the most. Quite frankly a bunch of bullshit.

Rest and repair is necessary for all living beings, and you cannot give your best in any area of life without honoring that truth. Especially in the grieving process, our bodies and hearts are going through so much, we must give ourselves grace to allow extra time for rest, moving slowly, finding time to ground, and set boundaries for ourselves and others. No achievement outweighs peace of mind, so make that the priority, and give yourself a break.

You made it through a wild year full of challenges, and you deserve some damn rest. Happy holidays Santosha family, you made it, time to chill the hell out a little bit 🖤✨

On winter solstice, the darkest day of the year, we can find so many parallels in this metaphor with our own grief and struggles in life. It is truly time to reflect on the duality of our human experience, the yin and yang of life, the truth and necessity of light and dark in the world and in ourselves.

We celebrate this cold and dark time of year with lights, sparkle, glitter, cheer, and all things shiny and bright. From this point forward, the darkness of the day will get shorter and shorter. This cycle happens every year and without fail, we know the darkness will not last forever. Winter teaches us to embrace stillness, quiet and endings, to cultivate patience and have faith in the new and beautiful things to come.

Can we have such faith in ourselves in our own seasons of darkness to know that they too will pass? And just like the seasons, we will never fully lose our darkness, but the light will always return. Not only does the darkness fade, but it makes space for all good things - new life, beauty, a fresh start.

We too can let the darkness and pain shape us, make us better, bring us new hope, inspiration, and positive change. Find peace in the stillness and clarity in rebirth and new possibilities. Good news/bad news. You’re not alone - we are all going to experience many of these forms of loss, change and transition throughout life. None of us are exempt from this human reality. Grief is so layered and nuanced and includes so many experiences and emotions beyond mourning a death. We may be grieving so many types of change in our lives - relationships, aging, a loss of sense of safety, changing worldviews, lifestyle changes, so many things can encompass the grief experience.

And the “bad” news is just that - you have probably experienced loss and grief in many of these categories, and you will again. And while it is true that this is a universal experience, your unique circumstances can make it a very personal and often times isolating experience.

The “good” news is also just that - you’re not alone. We all go through so many similar things in this life, and while nobody will ever be able to truly walk in your shoes, we can chose to walk through life with more compassion towards ourselves, our community and towards strangers - knowing that every single one us struggles or will struggle in this way. We can find community, a sort of leveling up in our own personal growth journeys, and learn to see grief care as an integral part of our self care practices. We can build the tools and use them to better cope with the inevitable ups and downs of this human experience.

The BEST news is that we are resilient and adaptable beings, and for all the painful parts of life that we will experience, there are a thousand more beautiful things to appreciate in this life. If we make an active effort in the practice of noticing, practicing gratitude, practicing self love and practicing grace, the beauty, pleasure, joy and satisfaction is ours to enjoy. That is Santosha.

One of my closest friends and fantastic yoga teacher @saritadita shared this passage with me from legendary American nun & Buddhist Pema Chödrön and I absolutely loved it. I think it really embodies the idea of Santosha, my own views of life, my own journey with grief and mental health, and really the human experience in general.

Isn’t it kind of freeing to know that the ups and downs are just part of life and not just a reflection of how we’re doing as humans? That failure, loss, pain and grief is not some personal failure but really just a fact of life? That we can stop having this white knuckle grip on life, on expectations and outcomes, and just learn to ride the wave? Exhale. Never to stop giving our best and truest most genuine effort, but with a little bit of surrender to the universe. Effort and ease.

“There is no cure for the facts of life…stop struggling against the nature of reality…we can stop harming others and ourselves in our efforts to escape the alternation of pleasure & pain. We can relax and be fully present for our lives.”

My God how much time and energy we spend trying to fix the lows and chase the highs instead of just being present with the experiences. There is so much peace and humility in knowing that we are not actually defined by our lows or our highs.

We can practice this shift in perspective, build the tools, the community, and a self of self so strong so that we can find peace in any condition. That is Santosha. 🖤
